Will you Help?

| What Pearl Davis has
done in Jamaica is both heart warming and amazing, a pure demonstration
of the power of faith. After finishing her study at Unity Village and her
ordination she returned to her home in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Without any
backing she founded a church in the center of the city and began a school.
The church and school prospered despite the fact that half of the students
were the victims of Jamaica’s poverty and had to be fed as well. Today, with almost five hundred students in a cramped building without any playground except on the roof, Pearl continues to fulfill her vision. After I first visited the school six years before, Mr. Abram’s Foundation and I offered matching funds for several years. It was a drop in the bucket considering the school’s needs. Since Mr. Abram’s passing I have continued to visit the school annually and help as much as I can. Two years ago when I made my annual visit, Pearl took me up above the city to a beautiful plot of several acres with an old house, a view of the ocean, and space for a building and playground. She informed me that our funds had bought this land as the schools future home. Last February, Rosemary Rhea, who spends a month or two in Jamaica in the winter and is the school’s number one patron, called me. She told me that Pearl had mortgaged her home and hocked everything she could to get started on the new school building. Rosemary told me she had visited the site and was blown away. The walls and inner structure were up for an enormous building with an auditorium, class rooms, a big kitchen and dinning room, but that Pearl had run out of money before they could put a roof on the building. Frankly, by the time most Jamaicans reach their teens the futility of the poverty and lack of opportunity has conditioned them to hide their anger and sense of futility behind a smile, but inside negativity rules. That is why what Pearl is doing in teaching good positive Unity principles to that many children is the future of Jamaica. If you could see all those dear hope-filled faces saying the Prayer of Protection it would affect you as deeply as it has me. If you or your church could help in any way, no matter how small, it would be deeply appreciated. There are two ways to send tithes: Tax deductible contributions may be made by sending them to The Association of Unity Churches P.O Box 610, Lee’s Summit, Mo. 64063. Please include a cover letter stating that the contribution is to go to the Montego Bay Unity school, and note that fact on the bottom of the check. Those who do not need to go through the Association for a deduction and wish to send their contribution directly, state that it is for the school (not the church) and send it Federal Express to Rev. Pearl Davis, Unity Faith Center,12 Dome St.,P.O. Box 1173,Montego Bay, Jamaica. Walter |
